Imagining the Universe, May 27 @ 4pm
With its superb angular resolution and capabilities for both imaging and spectroscopy at infrared wavelengths, observations with the James Webb Space Telescope have already identified hundreds of galaxies that existed in the first few hundred million years after the Big Bang. Some are "Red Monsters": how did they grow so quickly? Some are "Red Dots": Are those dusty massive galaxies, coalescing supermassive black holes or tiny regions of furious star formation? Some have supermassive black holes: how did those form and which came first, the black hole or the galaxy? There is even a population of banana-shaped galaxies unseen in the local universe: What are they and why don't we see them today? Come join our discussion of how the James Webb Space Telescope has completely overturned our understanding of how early stars, galaxies and supermassive black holes formed.
Imagining the Universe with Martha Haynes
This regular LLH program will examine some amazing astronomical images and discuss what causes their appearance and the science behind them. Come join LLH member Martha Haynes for a close-up look at some cosmic gems, from tiny bodies in the Solar System to rocky planets around nearby stars, colossal stellar explosions, dark galaxies and supermassive black holes in the distant universe. No background necessary, just a curiosity about the universe around us.
The monthly program will alternate times between 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm. The 4:00 pm programs will cover the the stories behind astronomical images and the 7:00 pm programs will cover understanding the night sky. All programs will be recorded for members to view at a later time. This program series will be held on the following dates and times...
Jan 28 at 4:00 pm
Feb 25 at 7:00 pm
Mar 25 at 4:00 pm
April 29 at 7:00 pm
May 27 at 4:00 pm
