About the History Discussion Group:
Does a particular event in history interest you? Would you like to explore more about it in the company of other interested individuals? Or, would you prefer to just sit and learn? If your answer of any of these questions is yes, then the History Group is for you. We hold monthly free-flowing discussions around various topics in U.S., European, and non-European history, including how we can learn from the past as it relates to the present. In the History Discussion Group, knowledge takes a back seat to interest. All are welcome and a background in history is not required. Whether you are an avid student of history or merely want to broaden your knowledge of, and have engaging discussions about, different time periods and events in history, please join us.

Members will receive the Zoom link in their daily event e-mail. Call the office if you cannot locate the link at (607)319-0162.

Topic for our Tuesday, Sep 8 4:30 Zoom Session will be:

The History of the Thucydides Trap

This currently oft discussed topic has a 2500 years old angle
(established Sparta vs. a rising Athens), a last 500 years angle
(first fleshed out in a 2012 article, analyzing 16 older cases, by
Harvard Professor Graham Allison) and a very current angle of a rising
China vs. an established America.

We will focus on whichever of these aspects people find most interesting.

Good basic references include a copy of a 2015 Atlantic article  of Prof. Allison about this at

and a Belfer Center at Harvard website with detailed summaries of the 16 last 500 years cases at

A Graham Allison Ted talk (18:43) is at

Graham Allison has also written a book (2017)

Destined for War: Can America and China Escape Thucydides
Trap?--A Critical Examination of Historical Patterns Leading to War
Between Great Powers

Some other possibilities are in a History Group Village Talk posting from August 19.
