*Imagining the Universe with Martha Haynes*

This virtual LLH program will examine some amazing astronomical images and discuss what causes their appearance and the science behind them. Come join LLH member Martha Haynes for a close-up look at some cosmic gems, from tiny bodies in the Solar System to rocky planets around nearby stars, colossal stellar explosions, dark galaxies and supermassive black holes in the distant universe. No background necessary, just a curiosity about the universe around us.

Martha Haynes is a professor emerita at Cornell. In "retirement", she leads the CCAT Observatory remotely operating a novel telescope on a mountaintop at 18,400 feet in the Atacama desert of northern Chile. In November 2026, she'll be inducted into the American Philosophical Society, founded by Benjamin Franklin in 1743 to "promote useful knowledge." Most importantly, she is the self-appointed LLH resident astronomer.
