In 1714, Georg Ludwig, Elector of Hanover was crowned King, establishing the Hanoverian dynasty (which is more popularly known as the Georgians) after the first four Kings who ruled during this time.
In this presentation, Deb Schmidle will provide an overview of all five Hanoverian monarchs, addressing questions such as how a non-English speaking German, over 50th in the line of succession, became king; who was the last British monarch to go into battle; whether or not George III’s devastating physical and mental maladies contributed to his loss of the American colonies; how the future George IV gave his name to Regent’s Park and Regent Street in London; and how the only Hanoverian monarch not named George ushered in the Victorian era.Next in this series:

Bio
LLH member Deb Schmidle’s undergraduate and master’s level research focused on British history in the 16th and 17th centuries, an area in which she remains conversant. Deb has also developed and currently teaches courses on various aspects of London’s history for Lifelong in Ithaca.
